When he bought the Casino Cash scratch ticket from the Virginia Lottery, Miguel Carcana of Chesapeake never expected to win the top prize. If fact, he was quite sure he would not win at all.
“I scratched it in the store so I could throw it right away,” he told Virginia Lottery officials. Fortunately, he did not throw the ticket away, because it happened to be worth $300,000! “I took it to the clerk and said, ‘Hey, what does this look like?’” Mr. Carcana said. The clerk confirmed it was a top-prize winner. He bought the winning ticket at Moni Food Store, located at 3300 Taylor Road in Chesapeake. Mr. Carcana, who works as a chemical engineer, said he won’t go out and buy anything big with his winnings, except one thing: a plasma TV. Casino Cash is one of more than 50 scratch games offered by the Virginia Lottery. Mr Carcana’s ticket is the first to win the top prize of $300,000, which means there are still three top prize winning tickets out there waiting to be scratched. All profits from the Virginia Lottery go to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In fiscal year 2006 the Lottery turned over more than $454 million for Virginia’s public schools, representing about 10 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia.
